Tesco Poland Launches Competition to Help Schools Think.Eat.Save!

This month Tesco has launched a national Tesco for Schools 2013 competition in Poland.

This year the competition - which runs over six months – aims to help educate schoolchildren on the causes of food waste and look for innovative ways to reduce it. Tesco for Schools 2013 supports the UNEP- FAO global campaign dubbed Think Eat Save-- Reduce Your Foodprint, which was also the theme of this year’s World Environment Day.


Every school participating in the contest is asked to make a short movie about the problem of food waste and what can be done to tackle it. The winners, decided in 16 local areas as well as nationally, will be chosen by on-line voting and by an expert judging panel, including representatives from The Federation of Polish Food Banks and The British Council. The winners will be notified in early 2014. Prizes include classroom multimedia equipment, classroom cinema equipment and individual prizes.

Czesław Grzesiak, Corporate and Legal Affairs Director, Tesco Poland, is delighted by the reaction of schools to this. “Reducing food waste and redistributing surplus food to people in need are key priorities for Tesco globally, and we are delighted to be able play our part in taking them forward in Poland. This is an issue which matters to our communities here and by helping school children to consider the issue and encouraging them to come up with new ideas, I hope we can play a part in the long-term solution in Poland.”

Around 300 schools have registered to participate already and Tesco store community champions have visited 90 schools to help them develop their competition entries as part of nationwide initiatives to raise awareness of food waste.

On 16 October 2013, UN World Food Day, the Federation of Polish Food Banks will hold a special food waste event for schools in Kraków. This will include a cookery demonstration by famous chef Robert Makłowicz and a culinary contest for children. The aim of the contest is to encourage children to prepare healthy breakfasts using leftover food.
