The Ministry of Social Development and Fight against Hunger of Brazil and UNEP signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on 11 December 2013 to combine efforts in addressing the development of a sustainable food chain in Brazil, ways of reducing food waste and loss, and strategies to improve access to organic and healthy food. The Representative of UNEP in Brazil, Ms. Denise Hamú, and the Minister of Social Development and Fight Against Hunger, Ms. Tereza Campello, launched the partnership during an event of the Organic and Sustainable Brazil campaign, an initiative promoted by the Brazilian government that will now be endorsed by UNEP.
The Organic and Sustainable Brazil is a public awareness campaign focused on fostering conscious consumption of organic food during the 2014 FIFA World Cup and stimulating organic food production. The partnership between UNEP and the Ministry also includes the sustainable tourism Green Passport campaign and the Think.Eat.Save – Reduce your Foodprint campaign. The MoU with the Ministry of Social Development and Fight against Hunger broadens UNEP’s sustainable development work in Brazil.
“UNEP expands the scope of its actions through horizontal cooperation with comprehensive initiatives. There is no more space for small-scale actions for the environment in Brazil. This partnership is not only focused on the World Cup, but also sets a path for more structured sustainable production and consumption activities, under the 10-Year Framework of Programmes (10YFP) context. We expect this to be the beginning of an even broader partnership”, says UNEP Representative in Brazil, Ms. Denise Hamú.
“The World Cup is a strategic moment on the agenda of sustainability, and also an opportunity to show the fine organic food that is produced in Brazil. We have to focus on large-scale initiatives. We are now taking a big step in structuring a sustainable food chain”, says Minister Campello, adding that more than 400,000 families will be involved in the campaign as producers benefiting from the Ministry’s programs and also promoting environmental protection.
The activities seize the opportunity of the FIFA 2014 World Cup and other large events to be held in Brazil to promote sustainable practices. A new edition of the Green Passport Campaign is to be launched in 2014 to encourage local and international tourists to choose sustainable hotels, restaurants and activities, and reduce their environmental footprint during vacations.
